Steve Madden’s DEI Council was established in 2020 to oversee and advise on the implementation of the company’s DEI strategic plan. Since then it has expanded to also serve as a forum to discuss and develop new initiatives that can further these goals.

RECENT INITIATIVES

  • Amber Hikes Partnership

One of Michelle’s first proposals as part of the DEI Council was to completely overhaul our company’s approach to DEI trainings and create a format that is more interactive, engaging, and effective. Michelle also worked on the format and topics for a Fireside Chat with Amber and Executive leadership (including Steve Madden, the CEO, and President). This event, which included conversation around mentorship and privilege, was effective in highlighting the company’s dedication to this work.

  • All Hands Meetings

Another contribution from Michelle to the DEI council was the concept of the “All Hands” meeting, in which the CEO addresses the staff with company updates, and answers questions that staff is able to submit anonymously. Michelle learned about this type of event through her ERG network and was excited to see it become a successful event at Steve Madden!

  • Cultural Recognition Calendar

Acting as a liaison between CSR and Marketing/Creative, Michelle has helped facilitate the development of cultural awareness communications, through both internal and customer-facing messaging. In 2021 the company observed Black History Month, TDOV, AAPI Heritage Month, Pride, and Hispanic Heritage Month.
